AP – Brazil’s president said Thursday that “gringos” should pay Amazon nations to prevent deforestation, insisting rich Western nations have caused much more past environmental destruction than the loggers and farmers who cut and burn trees in the world’s largest tropical rain forest.

PC World – Amazon has the Samsung PD-P3600 Blu-ray player, which sells for $219 with free shipping; that’s $80 off the retail price and about $20 lower than competing retailers’ prices. This Blu-ray player made waves earlier in the year for its slick design, 1GB of internal flash memory for BD-Live content, and support for Netflix and Pandora streaming over Wi-Fi.

AP – Amazon’s Kindle can read books aloud, but if you’re blind it can be difficult to turn that function on without help. Now two universities say they will shun the device until Amazon changes the setup.

Reuters – Google plans to launch an online store to deliver electronic books to any device with a Web browser, threatening to upset a burgeoning market for dedicated e-readers dominated by Amazon’s Kindle.

Macworld.com – Western Digital on Tuesday announced a new, updated version of its Mac-centric external desktop hard drive, the My Book Studio. Available in capacities up to 2TB, the drive has both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connections, and comes pre-formatted for the Mac. A FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 connector is included for compatibility with older Macs.
